The Florida State Board of Education gave its approval Feb. 19 for Okaloosa-Walton College to expand its bachelor’s degree offerings and to become the sole provider of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the college’s Niceville campus. A baccalaureate program in nursing has been operated jointly in Okaloosa County since 2004 by OWC and the University of West Florida with the BSN degree awarded by UWF. The presidents of both institutions requested that the state authorize OWC to offer the program as a stand-alone degree starting this coming fall term. OWC President Dr. Bob Richburg called the state approval a "Wonderful expansion of our bachelor’s degree offerings in this community" in a phoned statement following the board meeting in Tallahassee. "OWC is now fully approved for four separate bachelor’s degree programs," said Richburg noting that OWC previously received state approval for two new bachelor’s degrees in teacher education which also begin fall term and that the college has operated a successful bachelor’s program in project management since 2004.oval degree Feb. offerings 19 up for to Okaloosa-Walton four. The bachelor's degree programs are expected to begin August of this year; and the Chipola Enrollment Services Department will accept applications from April 7 through Aug. 5.
"There is a critical shortage of teachers in the state and all over the nation, but especially in the five-county area we serve," said Clemmons.
Florida Community College at Jacksonville's three new bachelor degrees will help local nursing, IT and management leaders find the trained employees they need.
The school got the OK from the Florida State Board of Education to start offering bachelor of science degrees in nursing and bachelor of applied science degrees in computer networking and in supervision and management this fall.
"Even as Florida faces financial challenges, we are proud and fortunate to be able to provide the education to pursue the careers and jobs that are critical to the workforce of the region," Donald Green, FCCJ executive vice president, said in a news release.
The new degrees will bring FCCJ bachelor degree offerings up to four. It began offering a bachelor of applied science in fire science management in 2006.
